He knew one day that he would accomplish such a fate. Commander he marveled. With the new position, he would hold a higher status in the congregation and demand respect from the disciples. He would even sit on a higher throne in the heavens. His eyes suddenly shifted in his head. Would he be worthy of the crown? He had to be sure. There was no room for second guessing and he couldn t wait until tomorrow night. He needed to know today before midnight approached, indicating a new day. One more attack to hone his skills. Nobody would know. He wouldn t leave a calling card this time. Yes. One more. Tonight. Yes. He whirled his huge body and headed for the television. He turned it on. Then he made a mad dash for the morning newspaper on the front lawn. It was time to find another person to perfect his skills. If his luck held out, which he was sure of, there would be one less demon in the world. * * * Hearing those words, she gave a look of total innocence. Once more, she began undressing him, stripping him of his shirt in one movement, placing it carefully over the back of a chair in the room while he fumbled with his pants zipper. He knew something unspeakable was on the very near horizon. But he d created this situation for himself, and now he had to muster the courage to face it. Though his instincts told him to get the hell out of there. In an instant, he recollected himself; he tried to smile. Now, however, he looked like a man bravely suppressing an impulse to throw up. "You make your call and I ll wait for you under the sheets, baby," he said calmly. He touched an index finger to his forehead in a mock salute. Smiling, she seemed to think that what she had just seen and heard was more marvelous than any other words could have been. And yet the worst. She blew a kiss at him and left the room. She pulled the door firmly behind her. He caught the look in her face before she stepped through the door. It was a look of concession, as though he were right in what he was thinking an expression that was a dark foresight, like an advancing fog in the blackness of night. His eyes were locked on the door, but only for a second. He turned and made his way to the bed. He crawled in. Then, as if he had nothing else better to do than to lie naked under a set of white satin sheets, he sighed, "I guess you were just covering your ass, huh, Peter? Just straightening out a tangle." He reached over and grabbed his nine-millimeter. Slowly, raising the thumb and forefinger of his right hand, Allan Wright pulled back the slide and snapped a round into the chamber. Then, just under the satin sheets, he trained the weapon to point straight ahead.

About the Author
Ray Burton was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. Employed by General Motors and a partner in a small promotion company, he resided in Detroit until he relocated to Nashville, Tennessee, in 1991, where he went to work for the Saturn Corporation. Ray completed his first novel, If I Ruled the World, in December of 1998. His forthcoming novels include Marked! and The Turnaround. While employed as a Robotic Technician, he is currently pursuing his devotion to what his wife and friends call his "fiction addiction."
