Tears welled up in her eyes and she started to cry. She had never really known fear before, and now it was coming on strong. Her body trembled, and she fell to her knees. "What does all this mean? What is going on? Who were those men? What do they want with us? Do the men know about this? Are they in on it?" Her mind was flooded with question after question that had no answers. Jess slowly got up and started walking. To where she wasn t sure. She wanted so badly to be held and comforted right now. She had never needed that before. She had never had a reason to need it. But whom could she turn to? Who could she trust? She thought of Johnny. Would he even believe her though? Could she trust him? What if someone found out what she had done? Her whole life had changed in a matter of minutes. She would never be the same again. She knew that from now on she would have to be very careful. It would be hard to act the same as she had before with her newfound knowledge. She was afraid they would see it in her eyes that she knew something. But did anyone else know of these things? Could they suspect something of her that they themselves didn t know? Jess reached the corner of Johnny s street and stopped to try to compose herself. She wiped her face and brushed her strawberry blonde hair back from her face with her trembling hands. She drew a deep breath and let it out slowly. As she approached Johnny s house she saw he was outside playing basketball. She was glad she wouldn t have to knock on the door and ask his mother if he was there. She wasn t sure what she was going to say, or how she was going to say it. After all, what exactly was it that she had found out? People were watching them, this she knew. She had seen it with her own eyes. But for what reasons she didn t know. Furthermore, Johnny had no reason to believe such a farce. She knew now that she would eventually have to go back in that plant someday, someday soon. She needed more knowledge, some kind of proof. Proof of something that was much larger than her, maybe too large. Now she was venturing into unfamiliar territory, very possibly life-threatening territory. "Hi Johnny." Jessica said with a very false smile. "Hey Jess, where have you been? I ve been looking for you all day." Johnny responded. "Oh no! You didn t talk to my mother did you?" Jess said with panic in her voice. "No, I went by your house and didn t see you outside so I figured you were wandering around somewhere making up crazy stories, asking yourself crazy questions about other people in other places, and comparing their lives with ours. And I ll just bet you ve come up with a whopper about there being something mysterious going on in this town. We re not really here, we are part of someone s endless nightmare that keeps repeating itself, and when they wake up we just disappear." Johnny danced around Jess with his hands in the air, wiggling his fingers with a patronizing grin on his face. Jess started to cry. She thought now that she actually was trapped in a nightmare. Only there was no way to get out. "Jess, I m really starting to worry about you. I m just joking, really. I know you re just trying to make things more exciting. Please don t cry." Johnny reached out and touched Jess hand. Jess pushed his hand aside and held him close, sobbing uncontrollably. Even if she wanted to speak now, she couldn t. Johnny held her and stroked her hair. He really was beginning to worry about her. He was very passive and accepting of his way of life, and Jess was just the opposite. She always wanted to know why. To Johnny it didn t really matter why. After all, look what it was doing to Jess. However, Johnny cared very deeply for Jess. After all, they were all each other had. All the other children in this town were just that, children. Seven and under. Jess pulled herself back. She knew Johnny was all she had, and she desperately needed him right now. "Johnny, I have to talk to you. I have to tell you something, and I know you re not going to believe me.

About the Author
Much like the main character in my story one of my favorite pass-times when I was young was to sit in my favorite tree and concoct tales. Now that I am older I just sit under the tree to spin my yarns. Similar to the way comedians take simple, everyday life events and make them funny, I take those things and turn them into mysteries and conspiracies. When life becomes so overwhelming with everyday responsibilities and obligations I relish the opportunity to retreat to my fantasyland and create entire new worlds. I stand in awe of the endlessly intricate world God has created that allows us to ponder so many different scenarios. However, sometimes no matter how hard we try to escape the realities of life, we inevitably have to deal with them. When this happens I find enlightenment through my poetry. Through poetry I have found a way to untangle my thoughts and emotions. For many years I kept my writings secret to shield myself from unwanted criticism and rejection. But after sharing some of them with my family and close friends I found that these words could also comfort, inspire, and entertain them. After a great deal of coaxing, especially from my wonderful husband I decided to share my writing with the rest of the world. I now have two poems, "Love" published in The Silence Remembers and "No Middle Ground" published in America at the Millennium the Best Poems and Poets of the 20th Century with the International Library of Poetry, which can be viewed at
