BO was just not himself. He was usually frisky and full of energy. But, for the past few weeks, he was always tired, and didn’t feel like paying. Maxie, his sister pup, told their Mama that BO was eating her food after he had eaten his own food. Josie, his other sister pup, told Mama that BO was drinking all the water from the water bowl, leaving none for her to drink. Mama was very worried, and decided to take BO to the Clinic to see Dr. Dawg, the Veterinarina. Dr. Dawg examined BO, and took a blood test. BO and Mama went home and waited for the test results. When the results were completed, Dr. Dawg called Mama and BO to his office. Dr. Dawg said to Mama, "BO has Diabetes." Mama did not understand, and BO was very scared. Dr. Dawg explained, "Pups, just like children with Diabetes, cannot make insulin or cannot use insulin properly. The glucose, or sugar, stays in the blood instead of going into the body’s cells to be used for energy. Diabetes happens when the body is not able to use and store food properly."

About the Book
BO, feels tired often and is more thirsty and hungry than usual. His mother takes him to the veterinarian, Dr. Dawg, who diagnoses BO with diabetes. He explains the role of insulin in the body’s functioning, and explains how BO can help take care of himself. Dr. Dawg, Nancy Nurse, and Dottie Dietician all help to create a plan of care to keep BO healthy and happy. BO, THE PUPPY WITH DIABETES seeks to offer an understandable and accessible method for educating a young child about diabetes mellitus.

Norma Flaherty has an R.N. and a B. S.N and is a Research Nurse. Her hobbies include crafts, traveling, walking on the beach. She grew up in Maine, and have lived in Maryland for more than thirty years, mother of three children, grandmother of two.
