I saw the blood first, a deep red, spilling onto the forest floor. A corpse flickered into view. A thin man, full head of hair. His lower body was hidden by the trunk of a pine tree. Who was he? Did I know him? I tried to conjure up more detail, but the vision changed abruptly. I saw myself standing near the dead man, an automatic pistol in my hand.
I hoped this vision was one of those strange scenes that flicker into my brain but don't come true. This time it was so real, the emotional shock of it so deep, I stood transfixed. Trembling. How could I teach with my heart thumping mercilessly against my rib cage? How could I think clearly? How could I find the right words?
My mouth grew dry as I realized I did not have a choice. I had promised Troy Osborne.
'Sorry I'm late.' A rotund young woman entered the classroom. At her words, the vision fled. While she made her way to an empty seat in the back of the room, I pulled myself together and found a beginning thought. 'Let your minds float freely. Slip back into a comfortable, safe, relaxed place in your minds....' My surprisingly calm voice released the tension that had gripped my stomach.
The class sank into a receptive state and I began the directed image instruction. Troy wanted us to focus on the Solution Screen Technique this evening. Silence lay cozily in the quiet of the classroom but suddenly the air became stifling. My throat tightened. Pictures flashed on my mental screen--death, danger, the dead man again. It was more detailed this time. My hand began to shake.
I was the one who had killed him.

About the Author
Lois Browning Bauer is a native Californian who has lived in the city of Redding most of her life.
She attended Shasta College and later worked as a stenographer-bookkeeper in a local firm for twenty-eight years.
Always desiring to be a writer, she launched her writing career in 1990 with several articles being published in national magazines.
This is her first novel in a series of Hillary King Mysteries.
She continues to live in Redding and enjoys visiting with her three daughters and nine grandsons.
