NIGHT SHIFT The day is long and raveled. It’s shameful to see a clock thus,
The night is well eaten into.
The hands of the clock
Have spun and spun
Until the readings
Have become strange nonsense.
And it stands, arms akimbo,
With a blank look on its face.
Who all through the day
Is so correct and precise.
A mindless nuisance
In these wee, forbidden hours,
Left to gibber
Until those few moments
Just before dawn
When its tyrant’s mind returns –
Just as the cock
Unscrews his morning crow.

About the Book
This delightful little book of poems expresses the author’s love of life with a touch of humor, times and seasons, and an appreciation of God’s handiwork.
About the Author
Lee J. HalIe (1926-1998) retired from the U.S. Public Health Service as Environmental Health Officer, Grade 06 (Captain) after twenty-two years of service. He holds a B.A. degree in physical science, M.A. in Secondary Education and completed fifty-six hours toward a Ph.D. in public administration. He spent his life in Ohio, Arizona, Washington, D.C., Minnesota and Texas. In spite of his accomplishments, Lee had the heart of a poet. He was a decent, appreciative gentle man.
He is married to the former Marva Willis. They spent their early married life on twenty acres of desert east of Phoenix in the foothills of the Usury Mountains, where most of his works were composed. Here they built a house and raised six children. They have twenty-six grandchildren and six great grandchildren so far.
Besides this booklet of poems, Lee also authored thirty-six songs contained on three compact discs produced by Sweetwater Sound, Fort Wayne, Indiana as a work for hire. The titles are "Songs of the West," "Heartstrings," and "Boy and Girl Together."
