The following morning, Olga looked out from her kitchen window and saw a military truck being parked on the street in front of her house. "What can it be now, " she thought. A tall man stepped from the truck. He stood for a moment looking around the area. He removed his hat and Olga saw that his hair was quite blonde. His boots were highly polished and his uniform appeared neat and clean. It appeared that he could be an officer in the Russian army. As he walked toward her house, he wiped his brow with a white handkerchief. The white handkerchief cofirmed her thoughts. No ordinary soldier carried such an item with them. He knocked softly on the door. "Could he really be a gentleman?" thought Olga. She opened the door and stood back as he entered, tipping his head to her. Olga turned back to the window, then said softly, "Freidrick, I never thought that I could love anyone but Paul. He was a fine man, and I have his two wonderful children." Turning back to face Freidrick, she said, "But I know now that it is possible to love more than once. "He was an officer in the army of our enemies. We were both lonely people, Freidrick, caught up in a terrible war. There was no beauty in life anymore. Even the trees seemed still with fear. The fields I had loved were grave yards for young men. "I admired him for his fairness and his caring for the people of Kleindorf, yet he never forgot his reason for being there. That admiration turned into love and both he and I were surprised to learn that we truly loved each other." She walked over and sat beside him. "During those years, Freidrick, many children were conceived by rape; my son, Erik, was conceived by two people who truly loved each other.

About the Book
They were enemies and must hate each other. That is what the government leaders of the various nations told them. They were expected to blindly follow the dictates of the political leaders, as would a flock of sheep. It would be history repeating itself. But some human hearts would defy these dictates and love would replace hate. World War II was a most destructive time in the modern world. Many books have been written about persons injured or who died during this tragic period. But there were others, never mentioned, whose lives were changed forever. This book tells the story of those events. Then the Russians took a part of Poland and moved the Polish people to the Eastern most state of Germany. Thousands of German women and their children were forced from their homes and taken by cattle cars on trains to other parts of Germany. The lives of the characters in this book tell of the torment of the period, but it also shows that it is not the people who hate – it is the politicians who encourage them to hate. The human feelings of Alexei and Olga prove that love can conquer all.
About the Author
Ms. Wells was born in the
Midwest USA where she finished her college education majoring in history and
music education (instruments – violin, piano). The author has traveled
extensively, covering most of the world. After retiring from the business world
she has been a public speaker, involved in politics, and participating in
musical Soirèes. Having always been an avid reader, she uses the knowledge
derived from travel, research and observation to write her novels.
For the past thirty-years
she has lived with her husband in Southern California where she currently
teaches piano and violin.
