As he reached the office door he took a deep breath. "Get a grip," he told himself. He turned the knob softly and opened the door, walked in, and gently closed it behind him. "Excuse me! May I help you?" Person asked, just as his phone buzzed. "No, thank you," Zach said leaning on Pearson's desk. "I think you've helped me quite enough!" He moved to the side of the desk with the sleekness of a panther, not giving Pearson an opportunity to blink. Zach reached out and grabbed him by the front of his shirt, lifting him out of his chair and slamming his back against the wall behind the desk. Pearson was stunned by the slam and shook his head. "You son-of-a-bitch," Zach said, just inches from his face. "I hope you enjoyed my wife. Because now, I'm going to enjoy breaking your face," he said, as he raised his arm and with a tight clinched fist punched Pearson square in the face. Zach heard the crack and only seconds later, blood came gushing from his nose and mouth. He pulled out Pearson's chair and threw him backwards into it. "Let's have a little chat, shall we?" he said as he rubbed his knuckles. "I don't know what you're talking about," Pearson said, attempting to get out of his chair. "I'm calling security." "No, no, no. Not yet," Zach said, bending over and grabbing his shirtfront tightly with both hands. "What do you want?" Pearson yelled in a frightened voice. "Why did you shoot her?" Zach asked with rage in his eyes. "Who?" he yelled. "My wife, Cassandra Zachary." "I didn't shoot her. I swear," Pearson said pleadingly, holding his handkerchief to his face. "If you don't tell me exactly what happened between you and my wife, I'm going to throw you out that window," Zach said, pointing to the large picture window overlooking the park. There were beads of sweat dripping down his face as the veins in his neck bulged as he spoke. "I swear," Pearson said in a panicked voice. "So what was she, your personal whore? Tell me, where did all her money come from?" "What money?" "You know," Zach said, standing straight backed and looking around. "I'm really losing my patience with you old man," he said slamming his fist onto the desk. Pearson jumped in his seat, turning his face away. "In one short year, Cassandra accumulated over one hundred thousand dollars in her savings plan here. Her salary is twenty-eight grand a year! How much was each screw worth to you?" Zach said between clenched teeth. When Pearson didn't answer, Zach lifted him out of his chair again. Warm blood dripped over his hands and down the front of his shirt from Pearson's nose. Zach drew back his fist again, ready to land a punch to the Judge's already broken face. "Okay, okay, don't hit me," he said rolling his head from side to side. Zach once again had him pinned against the wall. "I better believe what you tell me," Zach said looking toward the window. Pearson was gasping for air, trembling with fear. "She was so beautiful. She made me crazy, I had to have her," Pearson said with a stutter. "She was mine!"

On the outskirts of town, on a deserted construction site, the partially buried body of a young woman is discovered. Though left for dead, she rests in a comatose state. As the investigation into Cassandra's assault begins, evidence begins to surface. Zach, her ex-husband and prime suspect, is left bewildered, questioning the life he had once shared with his wife, his first love. As she lay in a coma, her future uncertain, the detectives hit one dead-end after another until Sydney decides that it is time to find Cassandra's estranged family and dig into the past that she worked so hard to bury. Against her better judgment, Sydney allows Zach to accompany her on her cross-country investigation. Uncertain of what they will discover, they set out on a journey, one that will change all of their lives forever.

Linda is a Sr. Administrative Assistant at Yale University School of Medicine. She enjoys writing romance/suspense novels, as well as poetry. This is her first of several upcoming fiction novels to be published. In addition to writing, she enjoys a partnership with her husband in a small antique business. She lives in Connecticut with her husband and their two children.
