About the Book

"The Fifth Down is a terse, yet comprehensive, gathering of highly individualistic, and often philosophical or provocative maxies, about football, winning, teamwork, life and 'other things.' Be it a sentence or paragraph, Chuck Mills shows great talent for saying meaningful things in a concise and memorable manner. Here is a highly personal document containing the essence of the author and his football career. Its warmth, humor and perceptions make it a great book."

About the Author

Chuck Mills' football coaching journey began with a grammar school team, then to high school, junior college, small college, major university and professional football. He was an assistant with the Kansas City Chiefs in the year of the first Super Bowl. He has served as a college head coach, including eleven in Division I, over a span of five decades. He has received coaching honors and has had nationally ranked teams as well as having been dismissed for losing. He is regarded as the 'father of modern Japanese football,' having spent over a quarter century in the development of the game. The Japanese equivalent of the Heisman Trophy is named for Mills.

After eight years out of coaching, while devoting all his time to the athletic directorship at the United States Coast Guard Academy, he took over as the Academy's head football coach in 1997. A team picked to finish in the bottom half of its league in pre-season polls, went on to win the championship with a 6-0 league record. The team closed the regular season with a 9-1 record, the most wins ever during the regular season. The team qualified for the NCAA post-season playoffs. Mills was selected as the Freedom Football Conference Coach of the year, the Boston Gridiron Club Coach of the year and the AFCA/GTE Regional Coach of the year. He was also selected as head coach of the USA III College All-Star Classic.
