The third in the series, this one will scare you so much that you might want to read it with all the lights on. A world-famous horror novelist dies under mysterious circumstances. His remains are hidden away in a far-off grave in an ancient graveyard. The novelist, writing under a pseudonym, was known to very few under his given name. Among those few is Dino Fratelli, Detroit homicide lieutenant, who remembers the name as a witness to an earlier homicide case. Needing to know what happened to the writer, Fratelli and his team investigate, only to find the mystery deepen as the disinterred body is so grossly deformed as to be unrecognizable. A second body, looking the same as the writer’s, is discovered in an abandoned asylum in Connecticut. The ongoing search leads them to the site where another asylum once stood in Dearborn, Michigan. Digging there they find an underground chamber with a strange artifact―a huge throne-like chair carved from wood and covered with strange characters. One of Fratelli’s team understands the symbols from a nearly forgotten dead language.
