About the Book

1940, and the new war a few months old, but nothing was happening. After the lightning strike by the Germans on Poland, an eerie stand-off had descended upon the protagonists. This strange kind of warfare was being called “The Phoney War”, in the west, and “Sitzkrieg” by the Germans. After all the destruction, and death, of the WW1, it was strange to see the inactivity between them now. There was even talk that after the quick conclusion to the Polish campaign peace may breakout, but none of the rivals had made any move towards diplomacy, which only made the situation on the frontlines all the more bizarre. Then action! but not where everyone expected it. Finland after the Russian’s invaded, but neither of these were participants in this war, so although terrible as all wars are, it was not the main event. Despite this the peaceful days could not continue, eventually someone would break, and do something, which duly they did. This time it was the invasion of Denmark, and Norway, by German forces. Following events in the North, the long awaited German invasion of the West erupted on 10thg May. It soon proved to be very effective as they once more applied the successful tactics that they had used in Poland, with similar results, forcing the British to flea the continent at Dunkirk, and the French to capitulate. Paul found himself embroiled in these momentous proceedings as he was stranded behind the fast moving German advance. He then along with several colleagues had to fight their way back to Dunkirk. He thought that he would not be involved in this war after he had been turned down by the forces, because he had served in the Spanish Civil but ended up in the RAF.
