Coda whistled, and the black screamed an answer. He was on me before I knew it. His teeth drove for my unprotected neck, but I was able to swing away at the last instant. That left my hindquarters facing him, and I drove both feet into his side. There was a loud thud, and a whoosh of air. The black staggered sideways. I turned to find Laban. He was still on the ground, defending himself against a savage assault. From his position, it would only be a matter of time before Coda would be able to breach his defenses. The man beat at him mercilessly, confident in his victory. That was all the time I had before the black demon attacked again. We both reared. We battered each other with our front hooves. One hit glanced off my jaw. I spun with the blow, planting both front feet firmly on the ground, and lashed out with my hind legs, but he was ready this time. The black turned in the nick of time and dove at me again. I had to grudgingly admit, in strength, he was near my equal, but I had my intellect as well. If I was to save my friend from death, I had to end this fight – and quickly.

About the Book
I am Padrone, war horse of the Most High. I have been sent to earth to assist a peaceful nation named Baltric being attacked by an aggressive neighbor, Tiernan. It has been a long and brutal struggle. Their rag-tag army is near defeat, crops have been burned, and farmers killed. Worst, their king, wounded in battle, lies dying with no heir to take the throne. The people, desperate for help, have turned their hearts back towards a god they had almost forgotten; the god of their fathers; a god called Yahweh. And He responded. My mission is to find a young servant. He is dirty, humble, and of no repute. He is a diamond in the rough. He is to be their next king. How am I to accomplish this, stripped of immortality and the ability to communicate? Only Yahweh knows.
