About the Book

Following the recent election of Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost as the new Pope Leo XIV on May 8th, this compilation serves as an essential window into understanding the foundations that will influence the leadership of the new pope. In his writings, Leo XIII addresses issues with striking relevance today, ranging from social justice to the intersection of faith and reason. Born in Managua, Nicaragua, Alfredo Antonio Artiles Mendieta brings a unique blend of personal and professional experience to this project. Married to Doña Arlen Vallecillo de Artiles, they share a family with five children. Alfredo holds a double degree—one in Finance and the other in Management from the University of Mobile—and a Master's Degree in Economics with a concentration in Finance from the Jesuit Central American University. He is a fellow of the Global Aspen Institute and is also a university professor at the postgraduate level, specializing in Advanced Financial Strategies. His professional career includes roles such as Senior Partner in KPMG Americas, President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Nicaragua (AMCHAM), President of the Business Council of Latin America in Nicaragua (CEAL), as well as serving as Treasurer for the National Chess Federation in his country (FENICA). This compilation is aimed at disseminating part of the legacy of Pope Leo XIII, taken directly from the Vatican Archives. The original text has not been supplemented with any analysis or commentary. It is intended to support students who want to understand the historical influences that could shape Cardinal Prevost's papacy as Leo XIV, but most importantly, to serve as a gift to pray and draw closer to Christ, our Holy Mary, St. Joseph and His Holy Catholic Church.
