About the Book

Teena Maureen finds out something "keen" when she goes to a tie-dyeing class with her mother. She learns that two colors can blend to make another color. Read this fun poem about how Teena Maureen accidentally learns that "Yellow and Blue Make Green!"

This story and character design began over fifty years ago by Oleen Norman Tharpe -- her fascinating biography is on the last pages. Inside the story is a secret code to explore: printed letters and cursive letters. At long last, Teena Maureen tells her story to young readers in the 21st century.

About the Author

Oleen Norman Tharpe was born on July 6, 1920, in North Carolina. Ms. Oleen studied art in college. After graduating in 1941 from The Women's College of the University of North Carolina, she accepted a government invitation to take courses at NCSU to prepare for employment in Baltimore, MD, as a draftsman at the Glenn L. Martin Aircraft Company, as part of the war effort during WWII.

In 1948, she married Ralph Tharpe, and they raised four sons. Ms. Oleen continued to use her artistic talents as a hobby, as a private art teacher, and later as a kindergarten teacher's aide at Ronda-Clingman Elementary School in NC.

Her original illustrations and story of Teena Maureen were created over fifty years ago. On her 102nd birthday in July 2022, Ms. Oleen saw the first draft of her printed book. The family hopes her life's work will continue to inspire others.
