As we were wiping the stone off, Wienie stepped on it, and the gate opened behind us. Shocked, Wienie stepped off the stone. The gate closed. We looked at each other as he stepped on the stone again. It was magical. Beyond the gate was another world. A world that appeared to be dark yet felt so inviting. We saw a massive pile of rocks and dirt in the distance. We heard what sounded like rolling thunder, except there wasn't a cloud in the sky. We saw a vast field that seemed to hold the promise of a new adventure. We never made it to the field that day. Mommy came out to the porch and called us back.” “Elizabeth, we have never been able to go beyond the gate since that day.” Mr. Wienie interrupted, then he continued to explain, “Someone needs to keep Mommy busy. The mission could be too dangerous for just one pup alone. Now that you’re here, Elizabeth, maybe we can make this work.” While Wienie finished explaining his plan, I wondered if we should stay home. Daddy had told all of us to stay in the yard before he left, be good while he was gone, and not give Mommy any trouble. But how could we pass this up? How could we not go on this great adventure? Mr. Wienie reassured me that if Sager and I stuck to his plan, everything would be okay. I’ve been all over this world with Daddy, saving hearts one at a time. But I‘ve never left my own yard without Mommy by my side. Thinking about all the friends I’ve made in this world, I wondered how many more I could make in that world beyond the cedar gate.

About the Author
Wendy J. Hatfield has found herself fortunate enough these days to spend each day doing exactly as she pleases. Throughout her life, she has never known the meaning of the word quit. She experienced her share of typical growing pains and everything that went with it. She found everlasting love and lived twenty-nine glorious years of marriage to then be faced with the devastating loss of her husband. The survivor in Wendy pulled up her bootstraps and went back to the retail workforce as the CEM of Operations for a world-known craft house in her location for 10 years.
Currently, she is retired and enjoys traveling. Her greatest pleasures are spending time with her family and playing with, photographing, and writing about her three beautiful dachshunds, Elizabeth James, Sager Jane, and Mr. Wienie.
