The highboy stood a full seven feet tall at the top of the crown. Phil slid the stool up to the side of the highboy and climbed up two steps. He stood at eye level with one of three unique finials. Its base looked like that of an old urn and the top was carved in a slow spiral that made it look like the flames of a torch. Then he stepped down and slid the stool around to the front of the chest and stepped back up to look at the fan-like shape at the top of the dresser that was carved boldly in relief on the face of the small drawer. Phil drew his fingers across each groove of the fan as he considered the design. "I don't know about the shape of the fan. I've never seen this curl at the bottom. What do you think?" Sam stepped onto the stool and looked at it for a while. I'm not sure, let me get my iPad and I can pull up some pictures of the other pieces we've had." He returned after a few moments and with a few pokes at the screen he located pictures from their archive. "See, look right here, it's the same." Phil climbed back on the stool and pulled the top drawer out and looked at the fan again as Sam held up the iPad for him so he could compare them simultaneously. Phil nodded with approval and handed the drawer to his assistant. "Let's see what else is in here." As he looked back into the empty recess, he could see two finger holes. He reached inside and pulled out another drawer only about one and a half inches deep. "I think it's so cool that these old guys made these hidden drawers." "Is there anything in it?" asked Sam inquisitively.

About the Author
Rodney Mohr’s love for wood began at his father’s knee, where he eventually learned to work on ice boats, sleighs, dulcimers, houses and other woodworking projects. With schooling and more than three decades of experience, he has refined his skills to become recognized as one of the leading international makers of fine bows for stringed instruments. Through the years, he has developed an affinity for fine hand tools used in the woodworking trade. Now training the next generation of woodworkers through training workshops, including his daughter and others, he strives to inspire them to be accomplished artisans.
