About the Book

This remarkable book is a collection of almost 300 poems, impressive for more reasons than one. Composed over a period of sixty-plus years, from the 1950s to Guerra's death in 2013, these poems present a contemplative mirror on a life with all its ups and downs, blisses and disappointments, set against a culture where women already did it all without getting much credit for it! The poems speak of love in all its wonder; of her children and her own childhood memories; of her faith and her struggles to believe at times. Through symbolism, personification, and analogies, the author uses poetic and vivid pictures to let us glimpse a deep vulnerability. SEASONS OF THE HEART invites you on a frank, honest pilgrimage through struggle, to acceptance, and perhaps even to triumph. At its very least, it invites you in, as a friend, for a heart-to-heart conversation with a woman whose spirit lives on in this volume, published by her family in her honor.

About the Author

Yolanda Grace Guerra grew up in an era when women were expected to be able to do everything in the home, raise perfect children, and put aside their own dreams for the sake of others. She did all these things, and more, in a kaleidoscope of rich experiences that brought her joy--times at her grandparents’ farm--and sorrow, losing three brothers all at young ages. Her first marriage produced a son, but was not happy. Later, she married a good friend, a marriage that had its own challenges, but one in which she stayed for the rest of her days. Guerra, a proud woman who could trace her ancestry to Spanish nobility, was also shy and reticent, part of the reason only four of these poems were ever published elsewhere. But her children treasure her gift and so, at last--with the full approbation of the family--they offer this volume to the world, bringing at last to fruition their mother’s dream of being a published poet. We invite you to walk along with Yolanda Grace Guerra in her journey through life and be enriched in your own.
