There was no need to flag down the train with his small, red lantern a few days after Marciano began his assignment in Crook. Everyone along the railroad knew of the man's predicament and they supported his efforts to survive, Concerned crews expected a lonely figure to be there waiting patiently to board and those crews were more than willing to help especially on the coldest of days. On such days, the engineer and his fireman would reach down as Marciano would struggle to climb icy steps to the cab of the locomotive's engine and they would turn their heads in shame from the shivering man whose eyelids would be nearly frozen shut and his Van Dyke beard covered with ice where his breath had frozen.
