John Calvin Lloyd was born on October 2, 1838 in Elm Grove, Clay County, Missouri and died July 19, 1922 and was buried in Colfax, Washington. John married Mary Cantrell in 1863. Mary was born February 12, 1838 in Ela, Lake County, Illinois and died May 2, 1914 in Hooper, Whitman County, Washington. Mary was the common law wife of Alonzo Spencer Beebe and had two children with him- Laura Jane Beebe and William Beebe. Alonzo, convicted of the murder of Israel (Hogeye) Davis in a jealous rage in 1862, died that same year.

The development of a small town seen through the individual connections of its first fifty years. The forceful removal of the Native American population by the American government of 1858 left a territory open for homesteading. The new settlers, looking for opportunity or escape from the strife of the American Civil War brought their dreams, possessions and their large families connected to one another.
About the Author
Sandra Torres is first and foremost a wife and mother of four children and two stepchildren. She has, in addition, nine grandchildren. She and her husband both retired from the postal service in Washington and bought an historic downtown building there. They remodeled it and established an antique shop and overnight lodging. It is currently owned and operated by them. A long time interest in genealogy and a curiosity about her new home were the spark to research and record the family connections of the entire small town starting in 1858 and continuing to follow them through 1900.
