CIRCUS WAGON I love the circus wagon, With geometric shapes. The window’s a quadrilateral, With semi-circle drapes. The body is a prism, In which a lion reclines, He peeks out through the bars, Made of parallel lines. The wheels are great big circles. The center in pretty blue, Each spoke, the circle’s radius, In every imaginable hue. The perimeter of each wheel, Goes round and round and round, It is the only part of the wheel That touches the soft ground. Two horses pull the wagon, Their costumes with glittery hems, Quadrilaterals and circles, With diameters made of gems. The calliope plays music, To which the horses prance, And as it rolls right past me, It makes me want to dance.

About the Author
Vera Shembel has always enjoyed math and solving puzzles. She received her BA
degree in Math from the University of Pennsylvania, and her MA in Education
from Arcadia University. She has been teaching for over 20 years, and looks forward
to sharing her enthusiasm about math with others. In her spare time, she creates
costumes for theatrical productions, and enjoys puppetry, gardening, and travel.
Since math and the arts have been interests of hers all her life, Vera Shembel combined
these two passions in creating this collection of math poems and activities to present
math concepts in an entertaining way.
She lives in Pennsylvania with her husband, and has two children and many pets. Th ese
pets include her dogs Zorro and Raven, and several lizards, turtles, rabbits, and cockatiels.
