Lucy made it as far as the end of her development before she realized she didn't have any idea how she was going to get to her old neighborhood. She decided to spend the night in Patrick and Janine's tree fort and think about what to do. She didn't much care if her parents would be worried or not. Ever since her little sister was born they hardly noticed she was around anyway.
She walked from the road to the path and then climbed up to the tree fort. She had brought a small flashlight with her and it provided her with enough light to find some floor space to stretch out on and that's exactly what she did. As she lay there she started thinking about all that had happened to her in the past few weeks.
She guessed she was being a little mean lately, especially to Janine. The girl was being nice to her and it seemed like she really wanted to become friends. Lucy thought about Janine's mom being all messed up from her car accident and not being able to come home and she suddenly felt very sorry for her.
And then there was her little sister Catherine. Lucy couldn't remember saying a nice word to her in, like, forever , and she knew how much Catherine worshipped the ground she walked on. And her parents! They were so excited when they started moving their things over. All she did was whine and complain. Come to think of it they did look a little stressed out lately.
Lucy started feeling really bad. “Oh, Wow!” she thought. “I've been such a mean, brat lately.” She realized all at once how selfish she was being and how it was affecting everyone around her. “Oh, man! I have to get home and tell everyone how sorry I am.”
Just as Lucy was about to get up and run home, the most incredibly strong, cold gust of wind rushed into the tree fort. The skater posters that were on the walls instantly ripped away from their tacks and swirled and swirled in a circle just above Lucy's head. And “Oh….My….Gosh!“ Lucy was thinking, because just like Janine said, exactly like Janine said, the most amazing little green elf thing simply walked right through the tree house door.
He had a bright glow around him. His eyes were black as coal and the expression on his face told Lucy he was as startled to see her as she was to see him. He had no hair on his head, just a small green top hat with a gold buckle in the middle of it. He wore a green jacket and matching pants that only came down past his knees. He had long black boots that came up to his knees, and he was short; probably only up to Lucy's shoulders.
Lucy just stared at him with her mouth hanging open and her eyes bugging out, much like Janine had described her probable appearance when she saw the elf. As Lucy's scream finally made it out of her throat and into her mouth, the elf thing placed his little green hand over her lips and said in a real thick Irish brogue, "Now, now, don't ya be goin' off screamin' all over the place. You just scared the devil out of me too ya know. And why on God's green earth would you be sittin' up here in the dark? And why'd ya pick this particular tree to construct your home on? I thought you humans lived on the ground?
Me way to the next land is sixth branch up, sixth twig over, six shakes to the right, and all the rest of that sixth stuff. You're slowin' me down ya know! Now move your keister over a bit and let me pass through this trap door so I can reach the sixth twig.”
Slowly now the elf thing took his hand from Lucy's mouth and stood there looking at her. All she could do was stare back at him in total shock. The elf then pulled a pocket watch out of a pocket on the inside of his jacket, looked at it and said rather excitedly, “Oh, blast it all!” I've got only moments left to catch me ride to Zarra! Bloody move, Lucy. Pleeeeeassse!”
Somehow Lucy stood up and opened the trap door for him. “Ahh, bless your soul, lovey!” he said to her. He tipped his hat, bid her farewell and then jumped down to the branch directly under the trap door. He bent over and Lucy supposed he was looking for the sixth twig.
Suddenly, another incredibly strong, cold blast of air sucked down into the tree fort and out through the trap door opening. The gust of wind was so strong, Lucy found that she had nothing to grab on to to stop herself from being sucked into the opening. She let out a scream just as she tumbled through.
