Cold Ambitions

Two years ago I was hanging out in life’s purgatory, also known as a recent political science graduate with no prospects outside of my current profession as a law student. While working multiple odd jobs just to survive I wrote a story that would eventually lead us to this very moment in time. I entitled said piece “The Hiker” - A story of man’s ambition gone awry, culminating in his demise. After winning a local contest I was inspired to write other fictional works on its central theme, one told of since The Garden of Eden. Cold Ambitions is the collection of those works. It is a book filled with man’s desire and the outcomes from our impulses. It is a collection of works depicting stories of great success, personal demise, hopes, dreams, fear, power, determination, failure, deceit, love, greed, mysticism, and faith. The book consists of three feature stories: “The Hiker,” “The Golden Chest,” and “Stuck on Stupid.” The other works are a mixture of miniature stories, sonnets, fables, and other poems; each one portraying the central theme of life’s eternal frontier. One of the few consistent aspects of my life is that I can be described as a people watcher. It is a hobby I engage in every time I am in the presence of others. From my observations there is no trait that we humans possess more obvious, consistent, plentiful, and yet, undeservedly shunned as a monstrosity of power hungry men, than the very trait of ambition. I am still always a little surprised when a cringe follows the allegation of such conduct. If thought about in an everyday context I could envision few circumstances, outside of the atom bomb, which would evoke that same recoil. Certainly, I would say, no one would detest written language, civilization, interstellar technologies, and every other realm where man’s ambition carries us onward and upward. However, I do fully recognize the dark side of man’s desire and confess my intent fascination in it. I find it oddly commendable the risks some are willing to take. If administered in the right dosage one’s success cannot be quantified. But as in life people do choose to overdose. It is in these choices, and the consequences thereof, where the stories reside most heavily.
