Funeral was over too soon. Happened too fast. No one wanted to leave the shell of Momma Ora. Remember coming back to the house after the burial. Greeting all of our neighbors.
Even Yipes the dog came over and lay on our porch. Remembered how he kept barking and looking over at the swing like he saw someone. Grandma Ora?
Saw momma looking out over the fields. In her sleeveless black dress she was staring. Her back was towards me. Her shadows changed from my forty year old momma to a ten-year-old version of herself.
When she turned around the child disappeared. Her face was dry. She stepped up on the porch and sat by me in the swing. Where Yips was looking.
I remembered going to her. Sitting down. Saying, “Momma, I saw you, Aunt Twig and Teddy eat that cake in the trunk yesterday. Why?”
“How could you have seen that Dannie? The door was closed. You’re getting stronger.”
“I just wondered.”
“If you saw us then you are supposed to know. The cake was special?” She continued. “Momma Ora made it. It was a cookie. She told Twig last summer she had something in the old trunk if anything happened to her. Said all of us must be the room when we open it.
When we saw the cookie we knew. She always used to bake molasses cookies for us when we were small. Eating one turned a summer day into a festival, a winter chill into a warm room.

About the Book
DANNIE HINES, middle school art teacher, daughter and friend, is on a journey.
Her mother is preparing to leave this world. Principal Tillman has taken all of her classes in exchange for a class of students no one else wants to teach from the Juvenile Detention Center.

Dannie’s class, trying to find her place in the world when her family has evaporated. It shows Dannie’s friend, Margo, struggling to heal her family from
something she did.
It shows Dannie, desperately trying to help everyone and make her own peace with her family and her mother.
This book is about love, honesty, friendship, telepathy, out-of-body experiences, healing and more. It can help a lot of readers find a special kind of peace.

About the Author
Since the 1970’s through the present Diane C. Coates has been writing plays and screenplays. In 1999 she became a producer, writer, actor, editor of a public cable television show, Workshops Consortium Live. It airs weekly on the Manhattan Neighborhood Network, in New York City. 1971, she graduated from Howard University with a B.A. degree in art education. Later earned a Master’s Degree in Education majoring in experimental education. She has been a teacher and an artist for 34 years in the public school system. Her awakening to the paranormal and spiritual started in college. Presently Diane teaches 3D Animation at a charter high school in Washington, D.C.
