About the Book

This book is about the remarkable courage of a woman who never married, finding in a woman’s world the dignity and grace of a life to which she felt she owed “something higher…needing to do something to make her worthy of her death”. The “Other Poems”, are about the bangtailed optimism of people working their lives out in the “Depression Thirties” and through the hard times of World War II. They are the history of a place as told from the emotional memory of a boy who heard and saw much more than he knew.

About the Author

Larsen Bowker was born and raised in Nebraska, that unusual part that has more trees, rivers and hills than flat farm land, place rich in Arcadian legend and myth. His poems seek to reclaim something of the slow drama and texture of people’s lives before speed took away their voice and size took away their individuality. He has been a university professor of English, a Varsity Tennis Coach, a collector of books and Jazz records. He has written five books of poetry, critical studies of John Updike and Eugene O’Neill. His poems have been published individually by West Branch, Southern Humanities Review, Atlanta Review, Connecticut Review and the South Carolina Review.
