About the Author
The Reverend/Pastor Matthew Southall Brown, Sr. is the son of the late Christopher Frederick Brown, Sr. and Helen Lee Robinson Brown. He was born in the city of Savannah, Georgia and is the Pastor Emeritus of the St. John Baptist Church, "The Mighty Fortress" in Savannah, Georgia. He has pastored four Baptist churches in his over 50 years of preaching, pastering and teaching God's Word. He served as Moderator of the historic Berean Missionary Baptist Association, an association of 35 churches. He was also the general secretary of the General Missionary Baptist Convention of Georgia for 26 years. He retired from St. John Baptist Church of Savannah after 35 years as pastor.Pastor Brown, as he is affectionately referred to in Savannah and beyond, began his educational career in the St. Benedict Catholic School of Savannah and continued his grade school education at East Board and Florence Elementary schools graduating from Beach High School. He furthered his secondary education at Georgia State Industrial College now Savannah State University, American Baptist School of Theology (extension), and the Princeton Institute of Theology. Reverend Pastor Brown also studied at the University of Miami, the division of Addiction Sciences with a grant from the city of Savannah. His reputation and work as a pastor and community leader are outstanding. He chaired the Federal Court Bi-racial Committee appointed by Federal Judge Alexander Lawrence to assist the Chatham County School System in bringing about a unitary school system Pastor Brown has been honored by many clubs and organizations including an honor from the Jewish Counsel of Savannah with a trip to Israel. On that trip he visited Egypt. To Pastor Brown's credit, he has also been honored by the National Association of Social Workers, Southeast Georgia Unit as Public Citizen of the Year, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity for outstanding service in the field of religion and the Prince Hall Masons. He is cited in Who's Who Among Black Clergymen of the South 1979 edition. He was recently honored by the United States House of Representatives by an invitation from Congressman John Barrow to serve as chaplain for the day to that august body with moments of mediation and prayer. Pastor Brown and his wife, Lottie, have four grown children and 23 grand and great grandchildren. He and his wife reside in the city of Savannah, Georgia.
