About the Book

This is just a beginner’s book in algebra. We start on the assumption that you know nothing at all about the subject, and I will lead you step-by-step. This is for those of you who want to exercise your minds and maybe to stretch them a bit in a particular and recognized direction, like maths. In maths, algebra is everything. If you can do this book, you can do maths. This book is also for those of you studying a formal maths syllabus but feeling inclined to give up on algebra. Don’t bury your head in the sand. You won’t get anywhere worthwhile without some understanding of algebra. This book should give you that, if you persevere.

About the Author

Will Duncombe grew up in Oxford, England, in the 1960s. After obtaining his degree in psychology at Exeter University, he returned to Oxford, where he was employed at Edward Greene’s Tutorial Establishment as an odd-job boy, later as an O level maths tutor and later as bursar. In 1976, he cofounded St. Andrew’s Private Tutorial Centre in Cambridge and, as such, was arguably the youngest ever English headmaster. In 1985, leaving St. Andrew’s as a going concern, which still exists today, he and his wife, Fiona, moved to Brighton, on the south coast, and set up a new school, Bartholomew’s Tutorial College, where he still works. Barts seems to remain a well-kept secret, but it is a place that Will is very proud of and whose purpose is simply to offer complete academic flexibility. Will reckons that everyone should try to write a book in their lifetime. This is his.
