While the men slept on the ground near the fire, Tutu and Nino made Marilyn’s bed much more comfortable by building a small platform between two large limbs in a tree to keep her safe. She didn’t want them to go through the bother but they both insisted. They were quite proud of the job they did and Marilyn acted like she was being treated like a princess. Once everyone was settled in for the night, Yurah and Davi took turns watching the camp. Marilyn had a hard time sleeping. As much as the boys tried to make her comfortable she missed her own bed. But once she got settled into her sleeping bag she made the most of it trying to lie still not to disturb anyone else. It was a very still night and all that could be heard were the tree frogs and buzzing insects all around. As she was just about to fall asleep, she heard a rustling in the jungle just below and behind her. She turned to see what it could be. The noise stopped. And then she heard it come closer again. Yurah was too far away to call him and she didn’t want to wake and startle everyone. So she watched into the ferns until she could see the top of someone’s head coming towards her. She was just about to call for the men when the man looked up at something in a tree beside him. She looked into the man’s face and then she realized it was her brother Miguel! She almost jumped up and then realized she was ten feet off the ground. Miguel heard her move and turned his head to look up into the tree. He looked at her for a long second, and then turned and walked quickly back into the ferns. Marilyn wanted to run after him but by the time she got down she was afraid he would be gone. She looked around and everyone was still fast asleep. She hurried down the tree to the ground. She tiptoed away from Yurah as he sat staring into the fire sipping on some coffee. She quickly moved behind the tree then went towards the ferns. She heard a sound coming from just inside of them and she knew it was Miguel. She moved slowly towards the noise. The noise kept moving farther away. She was reluctant to go any further, but she needed to see him. She knew he came to see her, so when she was far enough into the ferns, she whispered, “Miguel, it’s me! It’s Marilyn your sister! I’ve come to see you. Please come out!” There was a deep silence. She thought maybe he had left. She kept turning around since she knew if anyone saw her missing they would come after her and maybe scare Miguel away. “Miguel, please don’t leave!” she whispered again. Just as she pulled some ferns apart to look deeper, she gasped and jumped back! It was Miguel standing right in front of her. Staring into her face he said to her in a soft deep voice. “Hello my sister, you should not be here. The Amazon is no place for you.”

About the Book

About the Author
Born in Western N.Y., Michelle travelled with her parents and five other siblings between United States, Mexico and Canada. Her parents finally settled in Colden N.Y. where her latter childhood years were mostly spent. When her parents retired, they returned back to Canada and settled in Southern Ontario. Michelle married a Canadian and after ten years of marriage she divorced and raised her one son Christopher, now getting ready for university in the fall. Michelle pursued a career in real estate in Southern Ontario where she still sells new homes and lives in the same subdivision where she works. “The Pond” is Michelle Dubois’ first published novel. Almost two years in the making, her critics have given “The Pond” fantastic reviews and going as far to say “I didn’t want the book to end!” She is also in the process of writing the movie script knowing that not only will “The Pond” be a bestselling novel, but also a big screen box office hit as well. Michelle feels that being a writer is a new endeavor for her and is anxious to write her next novel.
