They followed for about an hour and a half, when all of a sudden Beaver stopped and dropped down on the tracks saying, “He knows, he knows he is being followed.” “How do you know Beav?” “I don’t know--- I just feel it.” “Well, what shall we do?” asked Woodpecker. “Think Woodpecker, think.” “I don’t know, we aren’t in the ambush yet or they would already have us. So--- that means they are still ahead of us. Shall we try to go around them and get to camp?” “OK, “Said Beaver. “Now let’s try to figure where the ambush is.” Woodpecker said, “I think it will be to the right of the trail, that’s down wind.” “Me too, “Said Beaver, “Let’s go off to the right and try to circle around behind them. Then when we don’t fall into their trap, they will head back to the trail and miss our tracks, ---I hope.” The two boys would never know how close they had come to falling into that trap. They moved off and began very quietly to circle slowly around behind the enemy..
