Something must have really been taking over Jada's common sense that morning because before she knew it, she turned around and slapped her mom. She regretted it as soon as she connected, but she knew there was no way to take that back. Quicker than a Venus flytrap on a fly, Sharyse grabbed Jada by the arm, twisted it behind her back, and threw her onto the bed. "Are you crazy?" she yelled into Jada's ear, "I'll be damned if I sit here and work myself to death for an ungrateful child who has the nerves to wanna think she's gonna buck up against me," she shouted. Jada just laid there not knowing what to say or do. Her mom was holding her down on the bed by her neck, and still had her arm twisted behind her back. Jada didn't fight back because for one, she had calmed down enough to know that hitting her mom was the most disrespectful thing she had ever done. Secondly, she knew she couldn't beat her anyway, so she decided it was best to just let her finish venting. After a while though, the pain became unbearable. "Ma, you're hurtin' me,” Jada cried. "You think you're so grown and you wanna fight, so you make me get off you," Sharyse responded venomously like her daughter was somebody off the street. Jada realized she wasn't going to let her go willingly anytime soon so she called for help. She wasn't sure how he had slept through it all on the couch across from the bed, but she called her brother's name to wake him up. "JUAN," she shouted as loud as she could with her face buried in the bed comforter. "Man, what?" he said groggily. He hadn't waken up fully. "Juan tell her to let me go," Jada yelled again, hoping he would hurry up and wake up before she cracked in two. Sharyse was still ranting and raving, but Jada had tuned her out, focusing on her own rescue. "What?" he asked. Jada could hear him rustling around, so she knew she had to wake him up completely before he turned over and went back to sleep. "Juan, she's hurtin’ me! Get yo' mom". She heard him tussling with the covers in the semi-dark room, and before she knew it, she could feel them playing tug-o-war with Sharyse's arms and her neck. "Ma, what‘‘chu doin‘?" Juan asked, as if it weren't obvious. Jada thought the more appropriate question would have been: "Why do you have your knee in your 15 year old daughter's back and your hands around her neck like you're wringing a rag”?

About the Book
Her family has hit a rough patch and fifteen year old Jada needs an escape. Since nothing else in her life is stable, Jada finds herself wrapped up in a world where only she and her boyfriend Marcus Jones exist. About the Author
Coming from a family of published authors and songwriters, Awnye` Latrice has been creating stories since she first learned to write. Awnye` began to write poetry while she was in elementary school and by the time she reached middle school, was ready to begin working on her first book. However, she stopped writing after only a few chapters because she was more interested in boys and fun, like most teenaged girls. She finally got the urge to write again the summer before her first year of college. Once she picked up her pen and started writing, Awnye` was determined she would finish the book and Love's Remix was the final outcome a year later. Currently, Awnye` and her daughter live outside of St. Louis, MO and she is attending school to obtain a degree in psychology.
