She lay silent in bed, so deeply thinking. Her thoughts grew heavy, she could feel them sinking. Her busied head slowly grew quiet with dreams While rain beat on windows and poured down in streams. The sound of the storm soon entered her head And colored her dreams with terror and dread. She woke with a start as lightning and thunder Came crashing, beating and tearing asunder. Trees fell in streets and wind shattered windows. Flooding grew deeper and uprooted willows. Sylvie was frightened and ran to her mother. She clung to Mom tightly to calm her heart flutter. The next day at school, Franky did not appear-- Her best friend, her right arm, for most of her years. She worried about him throughout the day And got off the bus at his stop by the bay. The whole house was flooded, the waters had risen. The roof had collapsed, it was dark as a prison. Franky ran out, he was soaked to the bone. “Thank goodness you came! We’re here trapped on our own!” His parents came out--they were tired and worn. All day hauling buckets, clothes tattered and torn. “Our roof is destroyed!” cried out Franky’s mother. “There is no money to purchase another!” The next day in school, young Sylvie stood bravely. She spoke to the class, addressing them gravely. “I saw Franky’s house and it’s falling apart! His family is broke and it’s breaking my heart! Let’s help fix his roof, let’s see what we can do. His poor family needs us, his dog needs us too!” The class listened closely, then looked all around. “To fix Franky’s roof, it would take the whole town!” “And what can we do? We’re kids without means!” “What are you thinking? It’s as hard as it seems!” “Mom thinks it’s sad, but it’s really their problem. How can we help them when we’re on the bottom?” Sylvie stood her ground and she wouldn’t hold back. She spoke to the class with a powerful knack. “I’ll fix his poor roof and I’ll fix his whole home And if you won’t help me, I’ll do it alone!”

But when a powerful storm strikes the town and destroys the house of her best friend, Franky, she realizes what it is she wants to do. Joshua Ritter and Karen Ellis-Ritter (Authors) have been avid writers of poetry, music, and fiction for most of their lives. Their individual works have appeared in magazines, newspapers, and online publications, while their music and voices have been featured on television and radio. They are active community volunteers and recently founded a 501c3 educational non-profit organization, Compassionate Farming Education Initiative, Inc. Karen and Josh have been married for four years and reside in southeast Florida with three cats and a dog.
