It Started At The Church

REAL LOVE It was in July 1980 and I was seventeen when we went on our first date. He was a perfect gentleman. We went to see “Airplane the Movie” at Christown Theater and then went out to Bill Johnson’s El Diablo Mexican restaurant after the movie. We ordered a large quesadilla that we both shared along with some Coca Colas. We had a great time on the date, and I hated for the day to come to an end. When he took me home, he gave me a good night kiss on the cheek and a very warm hug that I will never forget. He held me like a man ought to hold a woman. I felt like a woman that night, not a girl. I could tell that he really liked me, and was into me. He was a great conversationalist with a different brand of humor, but I liked it. He was perfect to me; I was bitten by the love bug, for REAL. When he got home, we both talked on the phone for a long time. I didn’t want to stop hearing his voice, all I knew is that I loved the way he made me feel. We had been going out for several months when he finally took me to see his house that he shared with his brother; it was the typical man pad, but he was very neat and tidy. We listened to music and talked. He never even tried to do anything out of order with me. Like I said, he was always a perfect gentleman. He put on that old song, “When a Man Loves a Woman”, and that was it for me. I could tell he wanted to kiss me and I wanted to kiss him as well, even though we were talking while the song was playing. Then he looked into my eyes and I looked into his and we had our first real kiss, and I don’t mean on the cheek either. As he proceeded to kiss me in a way that said I want something more than a kiss from you, he said, “Betty, we should stop right here. This is going a little too far”. In the moment, I replied, “I know, but I want this, and I need to know how you feel about me? I do not want to give myself to you unless I know that we are going to be together and that you are committed to this relationship.” “Betty, I told you how much I have always liked you from the first time I laid eyes on you. If I was not going to commit to this relationship, I would not have been pursuing you all this time. Yes, I am committed.” “I really want to be with you in this way, Donavon, do you want to be with me?” “I’m a man that’s for sure, and I’m certainly not crazy, nor a fool. Yes, I want you too, but I don’t want you to feel like you have to do this because we are in this setting.” “This is the perfect time and setting for us.” So as we proceeded, I didn’t know what to expect. Up until then I hadn’t been with anyone else other than my high school boy friend that I met when I worked at Jack-In-The-Box, yet alone a real man. My mind was in a million places! I was excited and nervous, trembling from the excitement and from being scared. He must have known how nervous and scared I really was because he stopped and said, “I’m not going to hurt you Betty. I’ll be gentle, take my time and if you want to stop, just let me know”. Always the gentlemen... Now at this point I had a few questions before we got it going! So I asked, “Can I see it before we start?”
