Tong Bei fist or extended back fighting method was popular in the northern China. In high school Kuo Shu club, Tong Bei fist was introduced to me. There were big movement in steps and arms. They were very straightforward moves. I was intrigued by it right away. We have to be totally relaxed and very flexible to excute the moves. There are many single hand move drills. I spent a lot of time just to drill a single move over and over. At first, we practice the arm moves with a fixed step and then with moving steps. The style was an instant love for me. I practice Tong Bei fighting style since late 1970s. The relaxation of all joints, chest and back is an absolute requirement for the style. The relaxation drills helped me a lot both in health and flexibility. The power generation is from the feet up all the way to the hand. The forward hand move is balanced by the other hand backward move. The upward hand move is balanced by the other hand downward move. The study and practice of Tong Bei fist greatly helped me to understand and practice other styles as well.
