Divorce happens. No two people are the same and no two divorce actions are the same. As one local law firm in my town says in their television ads, every case they handle has “special circumstances.” That is exactly right. As a result, not every suggestion in this book may be appropriate to every issue in every case, and may not be appropriate to every issue in your case. As you were reading a particular chapter or a paragraph on a particular issue, you may have thought, “That’s fine, but there is no way I can do that.” More likely you were thinking, “ That’s fine, but there is no way my A- - H- - - spouse will ever do that.” You might be right. But don’t start with that negative perspective. Try to take the high road for your sake, not your spouse’s. Control what you can control and don’t worry about trying to control the other party. Focus on the issues. Focus on your communication with family and others. Focus on your disclosure of information, your diligence in fulfilling orders. Things will be better, or at least less bad, if you do.

This book is for people going through divorce, for those who know someone going through divorce, for those who have been divorced, and for those people with divorced friends and family members. Divorce happens. It’s usually not pleasant. The manner in which a person deals with divorce can make it more or less awful. Less awful is better. This book is about conduct and attitude which can make divorce less awful for you, your kids, and those close to you, and help reduce the cost of divorce in money, time, and emotion.
About the Author
Dennis Jacobson has been a practicing attorney since 1978. Since 1981 his practice has involved substantial family law and divorce work. In addition to his law practice, Dennis is an adjunct professor of law and ethics at Colorado Christian University, and has written materials for and taught many continuing legal education classes over the past thirty years. Dennis has served in a variety of leadership roles within the legal profession, including a term as President of the 1st Judicial District Bar Association and as vice-president of the Colorado Bar Association. Dennis and his wife Debra live and work together in Lakewood, Colorado. Their grown daughter Rebecca lives in Denver.
