Selena whispered to Katie, "Crawl if you can to the creek. We need water." Katie slowly turned to just stare at her, her eyes glazed over her tear-streaked cheeks. She was in shock. "Katie, move it!" Selena helped her crawl a little way until they were almost to the edge of the creek. She got to her feet and helped Katie up until they both dropped to their knees and drank the sweet flowing water. Oh, the water was so good. They could feel they were being watched as the men just waited for the girls to make a foolish mistake. Katie's stomach growled, and she looked at Selena. "You should have eaten more berries; then you wouldn't be that hungry." Selena tried to lighten the mood. Katie couldn't help but smile while shaking her head. "Yeah, I had a biscuit in my pocket from breakfast, it is not all crumbs by now. Well, at least we didn't get attacked by the bear." She looked at Selena, who was crouching down in the water with her dress pulled up. "What are you doing?" Katie asked. "I have to use the bathroom. Better to have a wet dress from water then a smelly one from pee," Selena replied. Katie stared in disbeleif, "I'm not dropping my underdrawers in front of that wild bunch." Selena was cupping her hands and trying to put the cool water on her bruised lip and cheek. Still knee deep in he water she looked at Katie. "Don't be such a prude; if you don't go now so be it." With slumped shoulders Katie decided to join Selena. Selena saw the leader barking orders once again to his men, and the girls knew that it was time to leave. They trudged up the small bank back to their horses and ceremoniously were dumped them onto their backs. "Where do you think they are taking us?" Selena asked. "Shhh. They didn't put the gag back in." Katie glared at her. "Well, I don't know what they have planned, but I don't like it at all." Selena looked around. How was she going to get them out of this one? Katie turned in her saddle. "Don't even think about it. We are not good enough to try to run away." "Pa will know what to do. We should have been back by now. I bet they have already been to the berry patch and are on our trail right now," Selena told her.

Tied to the post was Spirit, who was pulling hard to get free. He looked white-eyed and nervous with all the commotion going on. I don't think it's a good idea to be out here," Katie said. "Well go back in. I'm going to get Spirit before a stray bullet hits him." Yanking on Selena's arm, Katie looked right in the eyes, "You are going to get yourself shot. Your pa will tan your hide if you go out there." It didn't stop Selena. She shook Katie's hand off and crouched down, creeping toward her horse. Katie looked at her, making the sign of the cross, and took a step out. But then she heard a gunshot and retreated back to safety.
