One Sunday evening, I was about to baptize a very large lady. The thought had never occurred to me about asking potential candidates if they were frightened of water. When this lady began to make her way down the steps into the baptistry, I detected a look of wild panic in her eyes. She appeared about to scream. In an instant, she jumped on me and wrapped her large legs around my waist in what I think the wrestling community calls a scissor lock! Her hands were clasped behind my head and she was set. I tried my best in a gentle reassuring way to convince her that the water was not going to hurt her. She was determined not to release herself from my person.
Finally, after long minutes of dialogue, I decided the only way this lady was going to be baptized was with my firm assistance. I took a deep breath and allowed my body to sink to the bottom of the baptistry with this dear soul still clinging to me. When my seat hit bottom, I determined that we should be at sufficient depth to have completely covered the candidate. Going down was certainly a lot easier than coming up. I thought I never would get my feet under me. When I finally did break the surface, the candidate was still attached to my person. We walked out together. From that day on, I always ask people if they have a fear of water before I baptize them!
