Joan’s personal loss Joan was on holiday, she had decided to book herself a Reiki treatment because she had not experienced one before. When I was first introduced to her, i first sensed that there was a gentle energy radiating from her, but there was also sadness. For some time now I had used essential oils and candles during my treatments and on this occasion I decided to add some Lavender oil to my oil burner. Joan made a comment that she loved the smell of lavender and she had recently purchased a Lavender pillow for her bed to help her sleep. As I started her treatment I became aware of a sense of calmness around me, but it also felt as though I was in a vacuum and insulated from the out-side world. I also had the feeling that something unusual was about to happen, but I didn’t know what that something was and then within a minute or two Joan fell fast asleep. Several minutes had passed since I started the treatment then I noticed something by her feet that caught my eye. I could see what I thought were a number of small round globes. There were some holes cut out from the sides of my oil burner that would have cast a distinctive shadow on the wall by her feet but none of these were circular in shape so I discounted these. My eyes were now transfixed on the globes because they were moving randomly around in circles and then they rose up into the air and appeared to go straight through the ceiling! What on earth were they and where had they come from? For a minute or two I looked around the room, everything looked the same, my oil burner and the light from the corridor; there were no other light sources anywhere and I was completely baffled! Joan’s started to smile, she appeared to be fast asleep, so I presumed that she must be dreaming, then she started to cry very gently and smile at the same time and I presumed that this meant that she felt happy. I had seen tears like this before and knew that her tears were from something that had left her feeling deeply moved, and in a comforting way. I offered her a tissue to wipe her eyes then she told me about her son Paul. He had been unhappy for a long period of time and this had left him feeling very depressed and tragically, he took his own life, he was just 20 years old. Joan had struggled to come to terms with his death, she felt guilty, after all, she was his mother and she was supposed to take care of him! She should have seen the danger signs and prevented his suicide, this was how she felt. I explained to her that the closer you are to someone, the more difficult it is to see the obvious, after all, who expects their child to commit suicide? It had been 2 years since Paul’s death and it had left her feeling empty inside, that is, until today. Now she wanted to tell me about her wonderful treatment.

About the Author
Philip Westwood worked for more than twenty years as a nature conservationist. His affinity with nature has had a great influence on many people over the years, his enthusiasm and passion is extraordinary and he has the ability to lift the spirits of anyone in his presence. He has been working for several years as a full time Reiki teacher and practitioner and has trained more than a hundred students, some to Master teacher level. His knowledge and experience is vast, due to the huge number of clients that he treated while living on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus. His writing career started in Cyprus, with regular features in health and wellbeing magazines and this led to a number of articles being written about his work. Because he worked on a holiday island, there were people from all over the world living there and visiting the island as tourists and this gave him the opportunity to teach students from many different countries and nationalities. Philip teaches a western form of Usui/Tibetan Reiki and is a member of the Guild of Holistic Therapists and now works in Cheltenham England in his own private practice.
