Why metaphysics? It has something to do with things that are missing. In the little world I grew up in, the hills of Cambria County in S.W. Pennsylvania, there was precious little in the way of art. That probably accounts for why I became a visual artist. I look around and see what is missing. Right now I sense a lack of sensible discourse about metaphysics. For a long time I’ve been interested in that dimension of human life beyond physical existence. Religious types like to talk about that. However their discourse is so full of hellfire, damnation, and other sick and twisted nonsense, that a healthy person wants to keep a good distance. And there are the empiricists, the beady-eyed scientific types who pompously pronounce that nothing exists beyond the physical world. That leaves the philosophers. After all, metaphysics is a branch of philosophy. But, so often, their discourse is couched in such arcane jargon that a person thinks they are listening to a foreign language.

About the Book
The author uses the story of his life as a vehicle to tell what he has learned along the way about metaphysics. It is not a scholarly treatise, but the record of one person's attempt to understand what lies beyond the physical. From another point of view, the book can be seen as a comment on the gods of organized religion, and a project to pose a metaphysical alternative.
About the Author
At the age of seventeen Jim Miller left home and joined a monastery. He seemed to have a penchant for exploring areas of reality beyond physical existence. After twelve years in a monastery, his life's journey moved in a number of different directions, many of these involved the arts. He lives in S.W. Pennsylvania, where his ancestors lived since the late 1700's. He writes and does art work there.
