I sped home that morning with mixed emotions. Half of me wanted to cry. The other half was proud I had done and said what was right. As a whole, though, I was just plain mad.
I guess that’s what happens when you combine those two emotions.
I stormed into the house so violently, I didn’t even stop to pet Toby, who was waiting faithfully on the front porch.
Once inside, I slammed the door behind me.
“Hey, hey, hey! What’s that all about?” shouted Dad, who was busy watching television.
I just ignored him and walked back to my room, slamming that door as well. Normally, Dad would knock, but my lack of respect had lost me that right. He swung open the door and stepped into my room.
“What’s wrong, Trent?” he demanded.
“I don’t want to talk about it, Dad. Not here, anyway.” I didn’t want Willow to overhear our conversation. I didn’t want to make her feel bad that I had just been treated with prejudice.
So when Dad suggested we go for a ride in the Caddy, I obliged. As

About the Book
Once Mr. Williams began writing this book, important lessons he’d learned about diversity began to take on even greater meaning. Through the experiences of Trent Taylor Jr., he saw that people’s outward attributes are of far less value than what lives in their hearts. By fleshing out his characters, he began to sense that our skin color – that outward “paint job” – is really not the point.
About the Author
J.D. Williams’ first book, RESCUE ME, was an autobiography of sorts, so no one knew if there would be more to come. Fortunately, there was. Once again, in THE PERFECT PAINT JOB, Williams writes in a Mark Twain style, simple and unpretentious, though the social issues he tackles are difficult and complicated. His most sincere wish is for this publication to help others realize the wrongs of hatred. If it can accomplish that for just one soul, he’s done his job.
