“What do you know about your mother?”
I snorted sarcastically. “That most people remember her Power and her death more than they remember her name.”
Colin let out a frustrated sigh. “P-andora, your mother was a Powerful woman. She ruled a collection of gifted woman known as the Sisters of Serenity. Her position in the Council as High Priestess of Life was merely her way of having a voice for the Sisters. In truth she was the Sovereign of Serenity.”
My heart was pounding. The words he spoke sounded right. I felt them in my Soul.
He took a breath before he continued. “The Sisters of Serenity were protectors of all Peoples. The Sisters became an order from seven true blood sisters. The Sister’s numbers increased as others that were born with Elemental Abilities. The bloodlines did not matter to the Sisters. Everyone was welcome. Those that governed the sisterhood were original descendants of the seven sisters. The governing bodies were passed down generation to generation, they were all daughters,” He gave me a look. “They were always daughters. They all held a specific Elemental Ability as part of their gift. I have found conflicting information about them though. One thing that seems to be common is that for some reason the Sisters were scattered through the lands. They went into hiding.”
“Why?” I frowned.
“I don’t know.” He shrugged, “Your mother found her place in the Council as an emissary for the small community of magical outcasts called the Botolph. My mother found her place in the household of a widower with two small children. One lives in a mountain range far to the west of here and the other to the South.” He glanced down at his medallion. “You and I are called to return to the Castle of our mothers’.” He glanced up at me.
I felt a chill and could not control the shuddered.
“The Council knew she was powerful, but if they had known, perhaps they would have not tried to force her to marry another. They did not care that your mother was already married to King Archard. What they wanted was her submission. She would not surrender to them. She became a voice of the rebellion against the Council.”
“My mother?” I shuddered again. “A rebel?” I could not think clearly.
Colin shook his head. “Everything that the Sisters of Serenity stood for was against everything the Sons Of Dokein—”
“Bu-but my father was one of the Sons…” I looked at him with uncertainty. Did my father have my mother killed?
“Yes, but he would not turn against your mother. Since neither would yield to their demand they brought charges against your mother. They demanded penance, and nearly stripped your father of his kingdom. I don’t know how he remained King, perhaps it was because of his standing with the Sons, or the Brotherhood. I am not sure. I do know that the Council did not know about you. The stories you heard…well, I don’t know what stories you heard, but what I had been told, after my mother died (murdered), were out and out lies.” He glared at the fireplace and I noticed the flame jump. “I knew the truth, but it didn’t stop people trying to tell me the lies.” He turned his anger away as he looked at me. “I was at the Temple of Righteousness when she died. Shortly afterward I began my training I began searching for a man named Tulley.”
“Tulley?” I frowned. “He also…” I swallowed. “My mother.”
Colin dropped his head. “He was chosen for a reason.”
I bit my lip. “I know, he was the best… Arbitrator.” I muttered. I fought the chill to my Soul. I pulled the cloak around me tighter but it did little to warm the inner chill I felt. “So my mother...?”
Colin gave a nod. “You by right are now the Sovereign of Serenity.”
I shook my head. Just him saying it sounded foolish. “I can’t be Sovereign of anything, Colin.” I glared at him. “I’m an assassin, an Arbitrator! Stars Above! I have no ties to family and I have been raised to murder and kill.” I was on my feet and pacing before I realized it. “I cannot be part of some peaceful sisterhood.” I spat.
