The Mystical Life of the Dog with Three Legs

Humpty was standing by his garden gate as he had done on so many previous occasions  - watching the sun rise and listening to the dawn chorus when to his surprise he saw a three legged dog walking slowly up the road towards him. Where had she come from, he wondered.  He lived quite a few miles from the next village and even further from the nearest town. The dog looked so tired. She stopped a few paces away from his gate.
“Hello girl. I won’t hurt you pet. You’re such a pretty dog,” he said admiringly. “Come and see me. You must have walked miles and I can see that you’re exhausted.”
The dog had striking markings and a beautiful face but she looked sad and anxious. She began to walk very hesitantly towards him. She looks a lovely dog, thought Humpty and she’s a good dog who deserves to be happy.
“What’s the matter lovely, sad dog?” he asked.
“I’m tired,”  she answered, “and I haven’t had anything to eat since yesterday morning. I can’t go much further.”
Humpty, who was used to talking to animals, noticed a very strange thing, this dog could reply to his questions in Humpty’s language!
“I can understand you,” he blurted out.
“I can understand you,” replied the dog swinging her tail just a little.
“What’s your name pet?”
“I’m called Beauty.”
