Things That Never Were

I stand alone on this battlefield,
though I have no weapon I can wield.
Ashes and dust of my fallen friends;
I beg to God, this nightmare to end.
We started a war in the name of peace;
to give life a chance to renew its lease.
Our flag of white, blue and red
droops with remorse for all the dead.
The price for freedom is growing steeper,
brothers in arms are the Lady's keepers.
Soldiers fighting for their right to go home;
