Historians who have studied and researched the great nations of the earth, from time to time, discover and relay to us the information on the many different deities these great nations would worship. For example, if we analyse Greek mythology, the ancient Greeks would have the God of Jupiter, Mars, the God of Thunder etc. Many other nations would have their own commonly known deity.
Allah in the Qur'an, mentions and reminds mankind that the entire universe and the creation within it, all submits to Him alone. Even our organs, like the heart submits to Allah by functioning, fulfilling its purpose until a time decreed for it by Allah. Everything which functions and operates in the universe, is already submitting itself to the order and the command of Allah. Even the Sun runs its course, (until a time decreed by Allah). All of these are a reminder to those who submit their will to the `creation of God,' rather than submitting their will to the `Creator' of the creation.
Historians show that many people from among the ancient Egyptians and the ancient Greeks used to worship the star known as Sirius. If we research its history, we will find that many nations even marked it as an important omen, and many held superstitious beliefs about the star Sirius too. However, Allah reminds them, and informs mankind (as a whole) in the Qur'an: Ch: 53 (The Star), V.49 that "It is He (Allah) Who is the Lord of Sirius.”
We can probably agree and ask, what is so special about that? Anyone can write, or mention this `fact' as it is quite obvious God is the Creator of the star Sirius. Where is the `miracle or Sign' in this verse?
Come let us try to analyse (in short), what has only been possible to know in our time through the aid of sophisticated and powerful technological instruments. Let us now uncover, a `fact' which was unknown to any human being, 1,430 years ago.
The Arabic word "Shi'raa” which is the equivalent word of the star "Sirius,” appears only in the Qur'an in chapter 53 verse 49, is particularly striking. Because, considering the irregularity in the movement of Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky, as their starting point, scientists discovered that it is actually a double star.
Sirius is actually a set of two stars, known as Sirius A and Sirius B. The larger of these is Sirius A, which is also the closest to the earth, and the brightest star that can be seen with the naked eye. Sirius B, however, cannot be seen with the naked eye, we would need a (modern) telescope to see it.
The Sirius double stars (A&B), orbit in ellipses about one another. The orbital period of Sirius A & B about their common centre of gravity is 49.9 years. This scientific data is today accepted with the accord by the departments of astronomy at Harvard, Ottawa and Leicester Universities. This information is reported as follows in various sources:
Sirius, the brightest star, is actually a twin star... Its orbit lasts 49.9 years. (Exposes Astronomiques, La troisieme loi de KEPLER, http://www.astrosurf.com/eratosthene/HTML/expoetheastro.htm)
As is known, the stars Sirius - A and - B orbit each other in a double bow every 49.9 years. (http://www.dharma.com.tr/dkm/article.php?sid=87)
The point requiring notice here, is the "double bow-shaped” orbit of the two stars around one another.
This scientific fact was only realised in the late 20
