I came across a taste of Irish humour on my first trip to the emerald isle. I was to deliver a load of cable to the British Telecom's depot in Newtonards and I was on my way to said depot. On the outskirts of Newtonards I pulled up by a little grocery shop and went inside to ask directions, I said to the proprietor 'Do you know the best way to the British Telecom Depot in Newtonards?' 'Ore ye droivin' a vehicle?' the owner asked 'Yes I am.' I replied 'Well dat's the best way,' he said'; it beats walkin' everytime. He had a little laugh and then pointed me in the right direction

About the Book
The book is a set of reflections and recollections of a driver's 40 plus years in the hard and unforgiving world of the haulage and transport industry. It delves into the methods resorted to, in order to survive and make ends meet for him and his family, in a world where the driver is considered the lowest of the low. There is both humour and pathos and some love and some violence. There are tales of underhand dealings, fiddles and thievery. It tells of times when truck driving was a man's world. Hard relentless toil, long, unsocial hours when there was no power steering and all gearboxes were constant mesh. When roping and sheeting was the norm. When trucking wasn't just a job. About the Author
Laurie Driver is the pseudonym of Dennis Burnier-Smith, A man born and bred in the City of Manchester where he still lives. Dennis has been involved in the haulage industry since he was 16 years of age and has been a lorry driver since 18 years of age, graduating to a long distance, class 1 driver at 21. He recently retired from the haulage industry due to the after effects of an industrial injury. It is since his retirement that he has taken up writing.
