Siren

“You are not what you think you are, child,” an unworldly voice said.

“Who’s there?” I asked, spinning around. No one; I was alone. When I heard his musical laugh, I looked down into the fountain water. I saw my own reflection, and beside me in the mirror of water, he stood. His jet-black hair fell in waves around his face, to his chin. His light green eyes stared into mine, capturing me in his gaze.

“Your turquoise eyes are the most beautiful I’ve seen in ages,” he whispered in my right ear, as his arms wrapped around me.

What the hell is he doing?!

“Who are you?” I repeated, dazed.

“I am but a strong player in the game of life,” he answered, calmly. His wings unfolded, showing me that they were the same colour as his hair. He began to stroke my wings gently.

“Yours are white, a rare gift. The first of our kind, actually,” he continued to stroke my wings. “Our kind usually only has black.”

Who the hell is this?! I was so scared; I wasn’t quite sure what to do.

“What do you mean by ‘our kind’? What are we?” I asked, turning to look at him. Then I froze. There was no one there, though I could still feel his gentle hand, stroking my wings.

I heard his musical laugh and I turned back to the water. “In time, love, in time,” he said dreamily.

“Why are you here?” My head was spinning in his words. He called me love! This angel just called me his love! I felt sick to my stomach.

“You need me,” he said simply. I closed my eyes, and drew in a deep breath. When I realized he wasn’t touching me anymore, my eyes flew open. He was gone; not even his reflection remained.

Get a hold on yourself! Nothing happened! It was just your imagination.

His laughter echoed around me, and I knew it wasn’t my imagination. Well, I’m definitely not, without a doubt, going to tell anyone! Not at all!

Then, I realized there was something around my neck. Once again, my whale-bone necklace was resting over the hollow of my throat.
