As I See It

The next night, it was getting late and by this time there were no cars on the road.  Due to the washed out sections of the road and the lack of guardrails, most of the people stayed with day travel.  It was getting close to ten o'clock at night and I was looking for the campground.  I figured I only had a few miles to go before we would be there.  Pat and the kids were asleep as I started up this slight uphill grade.  I was on the inside next to the dirt bank and had it in low gear.  The moon had disappeared behind the clouds, it had been raining part of the day so the road looked black and everything around us was dark.  I saw what I thought was water along the other lane in the road because it was a dark spot.  I was on the inside of a small curve in the road so my headlights did not shine into the road where the on coming traffic would be.  I got my front fender near that dark area, and held my position.  About that time, the moon came out from behind the clouds and lit up the area like a floodlight. What I thought was water in the road turned out to be no road at all.  Water running down the hill during the day had washed out the other lane of the road and it was just plain gone.  My front wheels were about two feet from the edge of that washout.  I could see how small the trees were down below the washout.
