Chapter Nine, "Round Seven"
One of my favorite adages is “When in Rome, do the Romans do”, which in many cases is nothing shy of good advice. So, when I arrived at my new duty station (RAF Alconbury, England), I held back (as much as I could) on my intrusion into the “laid-back-flow” of my place of assignment. My boss was a major, my co-partner was a captain (both white) and a young black Sgt. The office was small and barely had room for the four of us. I arrived during the lunch hour, which doubled as a recreation hour. The three of them were engaged in a friendly game of darts (a grand tradition among the English). From my observations, I became acutely aware of the playful manner in which the major interacted with the sergeant. Whenever the NCO would make a superior toss, the major pat him on the butt and exclaim, “Fine shot, Freddy”. Unfortunately, my officer’s training would not allow me to accept this sort of non-military behavior. I was especially disturbed when following each “pat”, Freddy, would break out with this girlish-like, “Tee-hee, tee-hee”. The sound obviously, enthralled the major; probably increasing his already superior attitude. I guess my immediate reflection was to take a total dislike for the major and vowed (under my breath) to stay clear of the man. However, there was a great miscalculation on the part of the major, which must have been my fault, because I forgot to stay clear of him.

American citizen, born in Atlanta, Ga. Eldest of six living children. Lived in Bristol, Pa, but grew up mostly in Trenton, NJ. Graduated from Trenton Central High School, Trenton, Jr College, Seton Hall University, University of Northern Colorado, American River College, Sacramento, CA. Served 20 years in United States Air Force and subsequently taught and coached boys and girls basketball for 15 years in High Schools in Sacramento, CA. Now retired and living in Del Webb, Sun City, Lincoln, CA. Father of five children and have 18 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
