About the Author

“Unquestionably Dennis Groves is one of the most fascinating people I have met in my half-a-century as a journalist.”

When Dennis Groves says he was bitten by his hobby, he means it—literally.

His interest in snakes began at the age of seven. During his career, he has experienced twenty-two dangerous bites, been spat in the eyes twenty-two times by cobras, been at death’s door a few times because of snakebite, suffered the loss of several fingers, and experienced strange reactions due to both the venom and the serum. He once gave the state president of South Africa a milking demonstration and then refused to shake his hand, appeared in court through keeping snakes in his garden, smuggled crocodiles across the Limpopo, and had some remarkable finds such as a two-headed snake. He found a way of milking the tree snake for the first-ever serum thereof, and has eaten snakes and snake eggs.

The one-time curator of the Transvaal Snake Park near Johannesburg, South Africa, he now uses his artistic talents to create life-size replicas of many types and species of reptiles and has amassed a unique collection of unusual specimens that any museum would be proud of.
