Between the Moon and the Heavens

     Jill was in Mrs. Spouts English class the next day.  She didn’t feel like writing a summary on Huckleberry Finn, so she stared out the window.  She was happy she was able to sit by the window.  It allowed her to escape her boring English Class.  Jill glanced outside, remembering the dream she had had that night.  The dream had felt so real to her.  It was the most interesting ecstasy she had ever experienced, and she wanted more.  She was almost becoming obsessed with the dream, because it had fascinated her so.  Jill remembered how she felt in the sky; weightless, free, and how she had felt as the animal; strong and energetic.  All things she never was in real life.  Something she had become while she was asleep.
      The day outside was warm and she watched birds sit in a tree and sing happily.  She wished she could fly like they did, and how she had flown in her dream.  The birds looked so happy, sitting together and singing in chorus.  Jill wished she could be as happy as them.  And yet, she was not.  This was mainly because her whole life seemed to be unhappy, with one bad thing leading after another, but this dream only added onto that.  She was jealous of the birds now.  How could they be born with wings, and not her?  Was she not worthy of such things?  Then, suddenly, Jill had the odd sensation that something was going to happen.  She turned her head to her right, and looked at the door.  Yes, someone would be coming.
      “Jill!” yelled Mrs. Spout.  She was standing over her now, looking down at her with her usual angry look and her beak-like nose.
      Jill jumped and looked disturbed.  How quickly that Mrs. Spout moved!
      “Are you doing your assignment?” Mrs. Spout asked angrily.
      “No, but…” she pointed to the door.
      Before she could say another word, Mrs. Spout cut her off.  “Oh, no, you aren’t going anywhere unless you’re done with the assignment, Jillian,” Mrs. Spout stated.  The door opened.  “You must be Cade Night,” Mrs. Spout stated.
      The young man stood in the doorway.  He had dark, messy hair.  It looked black, but when she looked closer, Jill realized it was brown.  Another thing that was different was that he had two different colored eyes.  His right eye was blue, his left one was brown.  Cade was wearing black jeans and a black t-shirt.  He wasn’t the typical dreamy guy; the ones who wore the expensive clothes and had blonde hair and blue eyes, but he had a different look to him that made him never the less appealing.  For some reason, Jill couldn’t keep her eyes off of him.  It was as if her heart was being pulled toward him for some reason, but she didn’t know why.  He was cute in his own way, but what else would it be?  Cade nodded at Mrs. Spout.  His bangs fell from the side of his face into the front, some covering his right eye.  He flashed a look at Jill, then quickly back at Mrs. Spout.
      “Come take a seat,” Mrs. Spout motioned.  She looked in Jill’s direction.  Jill looked at the desk next to her.  It was empty.  It had been for the first couple weeks of the school year so far.  “Why don’t you take a seat next to Jill,” Mrs. Spout suggested, almost reluctantly.  Putting anyone next to Jill seemed to be a set up for failure, but she had no choice.  All the other seats in the room had been taken.
      Cade’s eyes met hers once again.  She felt the odd sensation that they were connected together.  It felt as if they could have a full on conversation by just staring at each other.  Her heart pulled harder towards him.  It was almost as if her heart had begun to palpitate faster.  He walked towards Jill and sat in the desk next to her.  She watched him and he looked at her for a moment, as if talking to her without saying anything, and then looked forward.  She felt short of breath and an odd sensation seemed to crawl all over her.  He was so mysterious and she wanted to know more about him.
      “You’ll have to fill out these papers, Cade,” Mrs. Spout said as she walked towards him.  She handed him a few pieces of paper.  “This will tell me about your past English classes,” Mrs. Spout explained.  She turned her head to look at Jill.  “Let’s hope you choose to shine brighter than some students,” she looked back at him.  “And these are medical forms and such.”  He nodded and grimaced.  Mrs. Spout walked away, returning to her seat at her desk, and disappearing behind a thick novel.
      Jill turned to him and smirked.  “She’s been out to get me since freshman year,” Jill admitted.  He smirked, but did not look up from the papers.  “So, where are you from?” she asked him.
      “Not from around here,” he said quietly.  He turned over one of the sheets of his paper, and began to fill out the back quickly.
      “Oh…” she replied awkwardly.  “I’m Jill by the way.”
