About the Book

The book covers the author’s early years in Kent, followed by four years in post-war London, and then details the journey by ship in 1951 to Australia and the four years of hardship spent there. It describes the way in which her Mother made a home out of a garage (the only accommodation that the Australians were prepared to offer), the anti-British feelings encountered at school, and the difficulties that her Mother faced trying to find employment. Then the book takes the reader through the journey back to Britain by ship, to the joyous reunion in 1955 with family back in England, when the author was fourteen.

The book finally brings the reader up to date with the author and her family, and provides a happy ending to a mesmerizing experience, laced with humour and challenges in equal measure.

About the Author

The author has had a varied and interesting life, having been married to a police officer for nearly fifty years: having worked for fourteen years in the Personnel Department of a multinational oil company (Shell UK): and having been a Magistrate in a provincial city in England – but the abiding influence on her life comes from the four years of discrimination and abuse spent in a small Australian town as an immigrant child in the 1950s. She and her fifty-one year old Mother, employed as a domestic help on a sheep farm, were ‘dumped’ after being in Australia for just one week, with no money, no employment, and having no-one to turn to for help. Their fortitude and courage enabled them to survive with their sense of humour intact, and the author re-visited Australia in 1991 after retiring from work, laying all the old ghosts to rest, and loving every minute of every visit back there since.
