Jobs Don’t Always Go To the Most Qualified

Resumes are necessary documents

to secure the interview

During my business career, I have read many resumes, cover letters and interviewed many prospective employees.  I have provided guidance and counsel to many people in the proper and successful way to develop resumes and cover letters.

On developing the resumes, I contacted many employers (large and small) and asked them what they wanted to read in a resume.  They wanted a resume: which could be read in 10-15 seconds; a chronological resume which could be scanned; no more than 2 pages on white 81/2’’ x 11” paper - no staples; if mailed, do not fold – send in a large envelope; no fancy type fonts or pictures; a cover letter should be sent with the resume summarizing the skills, experiences and education. 

Due to the request of many unemployed people, I developed a workshop for white and blue-collar workers, which was presented throughout the state.  In addition, presentations were made to the management clubs, schools, and other organizations.

The application and interviews are products of the resume and cover letter.  It is important that the resume and application coincide with the interview.  

It is much easier to obtain that new job when you are employed.
