About the Book

About the Author

Dr. Marvin D. Carmony (1923-2006) was a native of Indiana. After serving in the Merchant Marines during World War II, he began a teaching career and became Professor of English and Linguistics (and also Associate Dean of Arts & Sciences) at Indiana State University.  Dr. Carmony was passionate about dialects, particularly those of Indiana, which became his major area of scholarship. Dr. Carmony was author of "Indiana Dialects in their Historical Setting" and co-author of "Indiana Place Names."  He served the American Dialect Society as President (1980-1982) and on its Editorial Board. He was also on the Editorial Board of American Speech.

In addition to his academic discipline,  Marv had a strong interest in architecture, geography, and history. He was a licensed radio operator throughout his adulthood. The current volume was his last work, and it brought together his diverse interests and love of his home state.
